Gymdesk, Zen Planner, Kicksite, and Grapple Growth: Why It's Not a Versus
Gym owners ask me this a lot: "I already use Gymdesk (or Zen Planner, or Kicksite). Do I need you too? Are you a replacement?"
No on both counts. I'm not a replacement, and I'm not a competitor. I'm the helper that sits in front of the software you already use. Those platforms are great at running your gym. My job is to make sure strangers find your gym, trust it, and actually book that first class, then hand them off to your software to become members.
Two different jobs
Think of your gym's business in two halves.
The inside of the gym is memberships, billing, class schedules, attendance, belt tracking, waivers, and member communication. That's what gym management software is built for. Gymdesk, Zen Planner, Kicksite, and platforms like them are the big players here, and they do it well.
The front door is everything that happens before someone becomes a member: showing up on Google when they search "jiu-jitsu near me," looking credible when they land on your profile and website, getting an answer when they call during class, and booking a trial without back-and-forth. That's the digital foundation, and it's what I build.
Most gyms don't struggle with the inside. They struggle with the front door.
"But my software has a website builder and marketing tools"
Many of these platforms do include website templates, lead forms, or marketing features, and some are solid. The difference is who does the work.
Software gives you tools. You still have to write the pages, optimize your Google Business Profile, build location pages, earn backlinks, set up follow-up sequences, keep everything updated when your schedule changes, and watch your rankings. For most gym owners who are coaching all day, those tools sit half-used.
What I add is the personal, done-for-you part: a brown belt who understands your gym builds the foundation, runs it in the background, and adjusts it as you grow. Custom, not a template.
How they work together
Here's the flow I set up for gyms that already have management software:
- Found: your gym shows up in Google's map results and organic search.
- Trusted: a complete Google Business Profile, steady reviews, and a website that looks like a real, active gym.
- Captured: calls, texts, forms, and messages get an instant response, even during class, with missed-call text back.
- Booked: the prospect picks a trial class and gets automatic reminders so they actually show up.
- Handed off: once they sign up, they live in your gym management software for billing, attendance, and everything else.
Already on Gymdesk, Zen Planner, Kicksite, or something else? Keep it. I build around what you use and connect the two so leads don't fall through the cracks. Don't have gym software yet? I'll happily recommend one that fits your gym. When your software works better, your members are happier, and that's good for everyone, including the platforms.
Why personal still matters
One more thing about choosing anyone to help with your marketing: almost any agency knows how to do this work better than you'd do it on your own. That's not the hard part.
The hard part is finding someone with a real track record in your industry, who has been in the community for years, and who is willing to put their face on it publicly where you can verify it. Most new agencies can't check all three boxes.
I've trained jiu-jitsu for ten years, I still train and compete, and you can see all of it on my Instagram at @tsullybjj. My clients talk about the work on camera, under their own names. Here's a full interview with Don Dees, owner of Modern Martial Arts in Clarksville, Tennessee. My reputation in the sport is on every site I build. (More on that in how to verify a gym marketing agency is real.)
Quick answers
Does Grapple Growth replace Gymdesk, Zen Planner, or Kicksite?
No. Gym management software runs memberships, billing, scheduling, and attendance. Grapple Growth builds the digital foundation in front of it: Google visibility, website, lead capture, follow-up, reviews, and trial booking.
Do I have to switch gym management software to work with Grapple Growth?
No. Keep the software you use. Grapple Growth builds around it and connects lead capture to your existing setup.
What should a new gym set up first, gym software or a digital foundation?
If you can't yet take payments or track members, start with gym management software. If you can run your gym but new students aren't finding you, start with the digital foundation. Most growing gyms need both.
Will Grapple Growth recommend a gym management software?
Yes. If a gym doesn't have one yet, Tanner will recommend a platform that fits how the gym runs.
