A New Website Won't Fill Your Mats: Website-Only vs. Full-System Marketing for BJJ Gyms

    By Tanner SullivantGrapple Growth

There's a new kind of offer going around gym owners: a fast, modern website for about a thousand dollars and a small monthly fee, sometimes with a free preview before you pay. Some of those sites are genuinely good.

I'm not here to trash anyone. I'm here to explain why a better website, on its own, usually doesn't change how many people walk onto your mats — and what does.

How a stranger actually becomes a student

Think about the last time someone signed up at your gym after finding you online. They went through six steps, in order:

    1. Found — they searched "jiu-jitsu near me" and your gym showed up in Google's map results.
    2. Trusted — they saw your reviews, your photos, and that you look like a real, active gym.
    3. Contacted — they called, texted, or filled out a form.
    4. Captured — someone answered fast, before they contacted the next gym.
    5. Booked — they picked a trial class time without back-and-forth.
    6. Showed up — reminders made sure they actually walked in.

A website lives mostly in step three. It helps a little in step two. It does almost nothing for steps one, four, five, and six.

That's the whole argument. A website-only offer improves one step out of six.

Step 1 is where most gyms lose

Most local students never click your website first. They pick from the three gyms in Google's map pack. Getting into that top three is mostly driven by your Google Business Profile — categories, services, photos, reviews, and consistency of your name, address, and phone across the web — plus a site built to support it with location pages and proper structure.

If you're not in the top three, a beautiful new website is a beautiful building on a street nobody drives down.

Step 4 is where the rest of them leak

Here's the test I give every gym owner: call your own gym from another phone during class and don't answer.

If nobody texts that number back within 30 seconds, every prospect who calls during class gets the same experience. They don't leave a voicemail. They call the next gym. The first gym to respond usually wins — and no website, however fast it loads, answers the phone for you.

That's why missed-call text back, instant form replies, and a self-booking calendar matter more than the font on your homepage. (Here's how missed-call text back works.)

The system costs more per month than a website retainer. It should. It's doing five more jobs.

When website-only is the right call

    Honest answer: sometimes it is.

    • You already show up in Google's top three for "jiu-jitsu near me" in your city.
    • Someone answers every call and message within minutes, even during class.
    • Reviews come in steadily without you chasing them.
    • You only need the site itself replaced.

If that's you, buy the cheapest good website you can find. You don't need me.

    When it isn't

    • You're not in the map pack's top three.
    • Calls go to voicemail while you're coaching.
    • You have fewer reviews than the gym down the street, even though your jiu-jitsu is better.
    • You've rebuilt your site before and nothing changed.

If any of those sound familiar, the website was never the problem. The system around it was.

    What we do differently

I build this for one kind of business only: BJJ and MMA gyms. I've trained for ten years, I'm a brown belt, and the standard I hold every build to is simple — if my dad opened a gym tomorrow, this is exactly what I'd build for him.

One of our gyms has generated 362 free trial signups with zero paid ads. That didn't come from a prettier homepage. It came from the whole system: found, trusted, contacted, captured, booked, showed up.

If you want to see what that looks like for your gym, watch the five-minute breakdown at grapplegrowth.com/grow. It covers what we build, what it costs, and what happens if you say yes. No sales call.
